Alaskan king crab fishing is approved during the winter months in the waters off the coast of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. The commercial harvest is done during a very short period, and the captured is shipped worldwide.
During the highest point of the king crab commerce on 1980, some Alaskan fisheries harvested up to 200 million pounds of crab. However, the total size of the catch had dropped almost sixtyfold on 1983.
Few speculations for the abrupt decline of crab population have been anticipated, including overfishing, warmer waters, and bigger fish predation. Resulting on the shortage of the current season, however, during the winter season of 20052006, 250 boats caught 14 million pounds of red king crab in four days alone.
Alaskan King Crab is a dangerous profession, and the death rate among fishermen is almost a hundred times the fatality ratio of the average worker.
So, if you love to eat its luscious and tender juicy meat; do remember the lives that were at stake just so you could enjoy it.
